Our Mission

Our mission is to provide people with accurate information about their genetic risk, help them understand and interpret their risk and assist them as they use this information.

Our Principles

Our Commitment to the Consumer

Smart Genetics has identified four key components that are necessary for us to truly offer value to our customers:

  1. The Need for Validity
Web-based genetic testing for the purpose of risk assessment needs to be a process that is:
    • Technologically valid
This means that genotyping is done at CLIA approved laboratories.
    • Clinically valid
Meaning that the gene-risk associations are well accepted.
    • Intellectually valid
Designed so that consumers really understand what they are receiving and what it means.
  2. The Need for Expert Oversight
Smart Genetics has assembled an advisory board of scientific experts and thought leaders to:
    • Guide us as we establish acceptable policies and standards
    • Provide review of and advice on the development and implementation of testing and counseling programs to help shape company policy.
  3. The Need for Consumer Education and Support
To permit consumers to make informed decisions about web-based genetic testing, Smart Genetics will:
    • Disclose the strength of scientific evidence on which any claims of benefit are based, as well as any limitations to the claimed benefits.
    • Disclose all known risks associated with testing, including psychological risks and risks to other family members.
    • Use only CLIA certified laboratories to perform genetic analysis.
    • Maintain the privacy of all genetic information and disclose our privacy policies.
    • Provide all relevant information about offered tests in a readily accessible and understandable manner.
  4. The Need for Alternative Access
    • Few primary healthcare providers have the time or specialized training to provide genetic testing services. Most genetic specialists work at academic medical centers and are limited in their ability to provide services to underserved and remote regions. Today, the internet is often the point of departure for an individual seeking health information. By utilizing the convergence of genetic research and internet technology, Smart Genetics is positioned to provide access to consumers in need of genetic testing and genetic counseling services.
